No wood wasted by these workers

Novodvinsk is a remote town in Archangelsk region of Northern Russia.  The workers that live in this town spend their days slogging away at the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill (APPM) where they produce boards, paper, and cardboard boxes.  APPM also produces a massive amount of industrial waste in the form of bark, wood waste and wastewater sludge that, if introduced into the area landfill, would create methane emissions resulting from the anaerobic decomposition of biomass waste.

But thanks to the efforts of APPM and the hard working people of Novodvinsk, all that industrial waste is being converted into energy.  Energy that’s being used to heat the town of Novodvinsk.

“The project mitigates carbon dioxide emissions by using bark, wood waste and wastewater sludge to generate energy. This in turn reduces the consumption of expensive and dirty fossil fuels, and prevents fugitive emissions of methane that are generated when biomass decomposes in a landfill. APPM estimates it will reduce CO2 emissions resulting from burning fossil fuel by about 180 thousand tons per year.  Additionally, it will avoid methane emissions resulting from anaerobic decomposition of biomass waste at the APPM landfill by about 25 thousand tons of CO2e annually.”

The APPM project is one of several projects funded by the Belgrave Trust in support of carbon offset projects.  “Since our founding we’ve helped offset the impact of a diverse group of members, from jet-setting New Yorkers to sprawling suburban families, and from a charter aviation service to two of the world’s most prestigious art fairs.”
