Kristianstad, Sweden is making great progress towards running their city without the use of any fossil fuels. The city, and the surrounding area, with a total population of 80,000, uses virtually no oil, gas, or coal to heat its homes and businesses. And don’t forget, we’re talking about Sweden here, not Hawaii. Meaning it’s pretty damn cold there and you’d think they would want to burn some carbon emitting anything just to stay warm. But no.
“What do they use instead? “Potato peels, manure, used cooking oil, stale cookies and pig intestines,” according to The New York Times. Kristianstad has switched over to biogas, a form of methane that’s created from natural biological waste (even residents’ yard trimmings).”
They’ve cut their use of fossil fuels by 50%. Which is what they’re saving in energy costs. For example, the city used to spend $7 million to heat municipal buildings. Now it costs more like $3.2 million. Sweet Sweden.
